First, I want to be clear that a meditation cushion or pillow is not required to meditate. However, since comfort is an important component in the practice, it may be a worth it! It was for my husband and I!
what is a zafu?
Zafu is a Japanese word that means round cushion for meditating. These cushions have been used for centuries to help the body maintain the correct posture as well as provide comfort for your bottom during meditation. In addition, they help alleviate pain in the lower back while aligning the spine for optimal posture. Many have even reported their legs and feet no longer fall asleep during meditation since using a zafu!
in conclusion
My husband and I meditate daily and we found ourselves sitting on a futon while stacking blankets and pillows around us to achieve the same effect as the zafu cushion set. In our defense, we weren’t aware that something like the zafu existed! While the futon thing was was cool as it served its purpose, we both for different reasons decided to make the investment in what we consider a meditation tool! My reason was to assist with my posture for better relaxation. He needed assistance with hip flexibility to help his spine stay more erect. We decided to go with the Crescent Zafu set by Awaken Meditation. We chose the crescent for better stability as it offers a wider base. Overall, this meditation “tool” has been a game changer! It is so comfortable and our joints and spine have thanked us. Plus, having a meditation mat serves as a reminder to practice peace daily!
